Geocaching in Kentucky
The sport of Geocaching I found by teaching some kids Clifty Creek water sampling. Upstream on the creek in a tree root area was a park geocache. The game is kind of a GPS hide and go seek with treasures that mutate with finders and notes left for the next player. Its a kind of group activity. My Great Books Discussion Group and I talked about it last time and based on Mrs. Hardy's recommendation I have bought Sarah's Key a book about French police ordered to send Jews under the Vichy government to Germany which is how many ended in concentration camps. On my friend at a laboratory's recommendation I also got from Amazon the series The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo etc. to start reading for the first time. One good thing about loving reading is to find new authors. Geocaching in Kentucky

Meet The Staff :: Trover Health System
I can recommend the Green River Hospice staff as being useful to anyone facing life and death decisions. It is a lot more than just in the last 6 months of a person's life, it is all about making a person have compassionate, kind, caring people to support you in what could be a very lonely period of your life. Teresa is someone I think of as Big Heart who was there for me in conference when I most needed someone to talk to in a crisis for Mom's care. Hospice was there for me in heart and mind and I can recommend them to anyone. It is the only non profit service for hospice in our area and universally kind to anyone that comes to them for care in the physical and most importantly the emotional side of life. Dying in hospice is more about life affirming quality of respect for a person than just getting to the last heart beat. It is all about treating a person the way you would want to be treated if you were the patient. Meet The Staff :: Trover Health System

This also raises the idea that it might be that spices like tumeric being studied for anti colon cancer issues might also help the digestion of some folks burdened by digestive issues. Ten Signs of a Fear-Based Workplace - Yahoo! Finance
One key to a happy career for me was I got to work under quality supervisors my whole career, cared about all my coworkers, had a healthy respect for each other, and knew how to work while being positive with each other. I used to enjoy going to work and in the field office I was lucky enough to work at some of my best role models in life were folks I worked with and for like Don Hayes, Charlie Basset, Phil Murdock, and John Martin at Earlington. Later I was able to have younger folks come in to my life like Jackie Logsdon, Greg, Ryan Hammack,Mark Lamar, Leland Steely,Gaye Brewer, Ed Carroll and Allan Kidd as coworkers and that gave a lot of happiness to my life. One thing was we were there for each other. We have sat up with each others kids, been to funerals, weddings, divorces, and dating phases in our lives and pulled for each other. I know any organization can mutate into what this article talks about, but the key is to put folks first, enjoy technology and use it to your benefit and make the goal of the group more important than any tool. All good folks that folks want to work for are people people who can be successful. There is a famous line about General Marshall, in West Point, where an officer was asked to judge Marshall as a cadet. He summed it up with the very apt line, "He is the kind of officer I want to serve under." I was very lucky in my career to have that feeling with the folks that helped me be a better employee, but most importantly a better person. Ten Signs of a Fear-Based Workplace - Yahoo! Finance

This was one of my favorite books when I was in school, but more to the point the movie is also one of my all time favorites. Atticus Finch is actually on some polls in the top of heroes in the movies and that includes the action heroes. Living Will :: Florida Estate Planning Lawyer Blog
A living will comes up in Florida as much as it does in Kentucky. One important thing in Kentucky to think about is when should you make sure your will is current? An example if you are married, have a divorced son whose ex wife has custody of your only grandchild, then you might need to be thinking about how your will needs to be if both grandparents were killed in the same car wreck. I have a good friend whose only daughter was killed by a drunk driver and left underage children he will now have to raise. His will changed that day in effect for real practical reasons. If a will has been in the drawer for years at least you have one, but if things have changed in your life or the folks you wanted to leave things to, your best chance to do it right is to go to your lawyer that does your family business you trust like I go to Randy Teague locally, and make sure its current. and on file. Living Will :: Florida Estate Planning Lawyer Blog
Kentucky: Attorney General Jack Conway - Living wills in Kentucky
It is also good to know about living wills since you might find you need a Durable Power of Attorney for Health Issues to help in things like blood transfusion decisions separate from a Durable Power of Attorney for financial issues. A living will has a more specific coverage so your health agent is not burdened with some decisions if you are unable to speak or needing hospice care and making the decision to go into hospice for pain control instead of curing that which cannot be cured. It is wise to have it worked out in advance so when stress times come, family folks have it organized for them and simplified. If your patient is lucky enough to be sharp and communicative and able to make all health decisions for you then it does take a burden off the care giver, but one sudden post surgery stroke could unexpectedly change that status and you would have more hassles. Ideally its in writing so there is no confusion at the end. Kentucky: Attorney General Jack Conway - Living wills in Kentucky
Power of Attorney
When dealing with health and estate issues it is important to have paperwork that lets you talk to insurance company folks and sign papers. A common thing folks get shocked at when taking care of a patient is Social Security will not accept a power of attorney in Kentucky and probably most places. What you do is hand the patient the phone, let them authorize talking to them that day for that question and then do your SS business. If you the patient were to be unable to communicate or react to the questions over the phone from the SS office to let you talk, you have to get the doctor to fax to the SS office a guardian appointment for the POA person handling business and that SS activation is valid only so long as the doctor says they need a guardian looking out for them. It is wise before you get sick to: have your will signed and ready, a durable power of attorney covering the needs you have, and perhaps a living will on file ready in case you are unable to speak for yourself leaving out guesswork. It is also wise to review with your attorney if family conditions change to make sure its kept current. A good attorney like I have is a wonderful asset to your family's well being. I would not sign a lease without my attorney looking it over first. A fee to have it right the first time can save endless agony later. When handling the affairs of a sick relative or an estate, my best advice is to always strive to keep it moving forward in a smooth manner, use your outlook scheduler intensely for dates and deadlines, and always keep in the loop the case worker for Medicare you are dealing with in the hospital. Homework and doing communications so the case worker knows your situation and thinks of you as a person first and not a case number can make things move much more smoothly. My local attorney is Randy Teague and having someone like that in your corner made handling my estate issues so much easier and less stressful. I also recommend if you enter a hospice mode, go to the funeral home and pre-plan everything you can so its ready and at a most stressful time you do not have to deal with issues. If you can have the rock up already where only a death date has to be added it can help later, and if you have it down to the music and type of memory card you can think much more clearly when its not the day after being up all night in a hospice room. Most funeral homes now have a link that helps you preplan a funeral on line and you can use that as a guideline or outline of things to talk over when you meet in person. I did that with Barnett Strother funeral home and it helped me immensely, plus they were as good as gold to me. and made Mom look better than I dared hope after such a long illness. Power of Attorney

I got the biggest laugh in weeks watching a Tn teacher called Hickok45 have a very serious discussion of zombie hunting in the woods and tactical training. It was so well done and so serious it got funnier the longer I watched it. He also seems to be as good a shot as my Uncle Marlin which is high praise. Zombies are no fun so keep an eye out for them in your defensive plan. I actually found on the net a gaming forum called Day of Defeat Source where zombie Nazi's attack WWII GI's who have to defend themselves with garands etc. in period costume and settings. Evidently the Zombie Apocolypse is more common than I knew! ;^) Sometimes its just good to have a sense of whimsy even in something like a shooting sport. What Causes “Eye Floaters”
I always enjoy biological what causes stories and this is a pretty good one common to humanity. Recently I was discussing with friends, the difficulty in reading a book where I know too much about the author's life and it can get in the way of the story on its own merits. Its similar to a human reaction I had with Starlight a mare that moved in the fence next door and began to pick on Leroy the donkey to the point I really had to work on myself to not actively put human motivations into an animal. I know better, but I struggled to like the mare. She seemed to be almost a bully to Leroy, then Dash the handsome gelding moved in and made my mare go into heat, Starlight bullied for three days and suddenly on the third day, she was number 2. Then I got on her to ride and found out she was insecure, herd bound, and when Dash was ridden out of site she was constantly screaming for Dash and not paying attention to her rider well. It opened up insight on her motivation, I began to feel a little more that it was due to insecurity that she over reacted towards the donkey, and I forgave her better. I have been reading a book with short stories from the Great Books series and one was a story called "11" which was written by a French author who was wounded in WWI three times and his health ruined. He became a pacifist which was not a great surprise after being in trench warfare, lungs impacted, and wounded that many times. What was a big barrier to me was he became in love with Stalin, moved to Moscow, and eventually died writing a biography of Stalin at a time the Gulag and purges were going on. Based upon what other writers were saying about him, he was not doing it to survive, but because he really was for the cult of personality that Stalin began. Now when I struggle with a concept, I read up on things, I think about it, I clean a stall and think about meanings, and I mow yards and think about literature multitasking. As I was mowing looking at the sky worried about a storm brewing on my Toro, I was thinking about how many authors I enjoyed for their craft and their life. I for example admire Isaac Asimov and have hundreds of his stories, I enjoy Allan Dean Foster novels and adaptions and Pip series but know not as much about the author. I really enjoy Ellery Queen and Nero Wolfe's Rex Stout who was a very interesting multifaceted person. I think Byron and Shelley were good writers, but I would have not wanted to hang around with them too much in an age before penicillin. I very much enjoy Sherlock Holmes, read a lot about Author Conan Doyle, and admire many of his traits while being fascinated that he could be so logical, and yet be fooled by photos faked showing faeries with little girls that should have been obvious that they were faked. It was almost as if the emotion of wanting to believe like Peter Pan could over ride the logic part of his brain and yet I think he would have been a fine fellow to have iced tea with on the veranda. One thing about thinking about literature, you can get insight into things the author does not intend. Shakespeare might have been a genius, but might also have been a practical minded man trying to come up with plays that would sell out too. Mark Twain once talked about the autobiography of Ben Franklin who was one of my childhood heroes and fussed about what a complex it could give a fellow reading it and thinking what have I done with my life compared to Ben's. Yet the one thing in Ben's book you never read is that Ben was a first class genius and might have had to struggle with the problem of what do you do when you are the smartest man in the room no matter where in France or England you go. Ben writes about all he does in a matter of fact way and never says, "Oh by the way I am a genius." Newton on the other hand was a flat out math genius that I will never be in the slightest and yet spent hours and hours in seclusion trying to find meanings in numerology such as how fate could be told by adding up the letters a person's name. I think its far more interesting that Mark Twain could be born and die on the return of Halley's Comet. I think its interesting to me that I studied history in school and learned things about WWII era listening to commercials for radio programs for Sherlock Holmes and the Shadow that had references to such things as having a program to have urban 16 year olds work in farmer's fields due to the shortage of labor due to the draft. I had never heard that in school. It is one of the reasons why I get nervous when history books get edited by modern readers with the prejudices of the moment. I think Teddy Roosevelt would have been one of those folks that would light up any room he was in and no one would be bored while he was around even at a dinner party. I read some of his stories of his life and found he was far more interesting the longer I read about him. Yet I had thought in school that some Presidents in the past were simple failures and not the ones you would remember, yet I found one president had a tumor at a time when the country was nervous and to keep things calm he had surgery on his boat at sea to hide the fact that he was gravely ill. Courage that puts country before self was a far more admirable trait than he had been given credit for in history books. Its very similar to those books that do What IF history, such as Hitler is successful as a painter and never gets into politics or America is not attacked in WWII, remains in isolation, and the Nazi army takes England and America is alone in the middle between two expanding cultures. What would happen? In some ways the old Star Trek story of going back in time and letting a woman get hit by a car who if she lived would delay entry into WWII allowing Germany to win is one of those stories. Its human to wonder what if, and its human to struggle to like an author whose work you do not like or to like a story when the author is a hard person to like. Yet something in me tries to see a story on its own merits even when its a struggle, but I have to be honest sometimes and question myself on whether I like the work on its story or in spite of what I know about the author. The opposite can be true in that I liked Annabelle Lee by Poe whose work I admire. Yet once I knew he was an artist at the bedside of a beloved wife dying of consumption and helpless to save her, I have always felt deeper about the poem and The Raven. I was once lucky enough to hear Vincent Price lecture at my university. The more I knew of him the more I followed up on his work like The Bat and being The Saint on the radio with Peter Lorre as a friend. Once I found his life interesting, I followed up on him more. I have seen on You Tube a video history channel in some ways his version of reading The Raven in that Price voice. And I have seen one where he was on the Muppet Show doing a Muppet version of the Raven and its just as good in its own way. Sometimes knowing more behind the scenes can add to a story and not subtract. But sometimes when a horse snakes its head to drive a donkey off from its feed, its still hard to not get irritated at a mare. Its just easier to understand when you know more about how that mare doesn't want to be number 1 and is insecure. In literature the more you know the better I think no matter where it leads you. Its one reason I don't burn books, or twist history to the whims of the moment. I once worked a spill where I knew what happened, who did it, how it happened, and was listening to the plant spokesman from the back of the room. Then when I read the story in the paper the next day, I could hardly recognize the incident as written with what I knew had happened. Since then when I hear news from a distant land with different cultures and languages, I take it with more than a grain of salt. You can edit a video or have a bad interpreter too easily confuse an issue. In a news cycle pressed for a deadline or a writer who never had a science course in a journalism major trying to explain what was happening, I have to also try and be understanding if someone struggles to get across to a reader a day later just what really happened. If you put yourself in the place of someone handed a hard job, and believe me writing a story from scratch that can sell can be hard work, then I try and give some slack to any story or author trying to do something creative. It may fail, and it may win, but there is a kind of good in trying to be good. When I read a story I bring all of my life story with me to the story. The best example I can give of the other side is when I read Harry Potter's second book I looked up at the clock when I got to the last page and realized I had read til 2 am straight through and I had to go to work the next day, but I was there so completely that the rest of the world had faded away and I had to turn the next page. That is why I think good writers in our era will still be read two hundred years later. It may not be a Mickey Spillane, but it might be. The tastes two hundred years from now might be similar or different. It may be that the Red Badge of Courage may be studied in school with Lord of the Flies, or it may be someone will study Perry Mason in a classic book series. Its hard to know in our age what will endure. Sometimes I go only by when I read the book, did I get immersed in it, escape troubles of the day, and have fun and learn something. If I liked it, the rest may not matter in my bookworm life. If I do not like it and someone else does, who is to say I am right. I can only know what I feel when I read a story. I am reading a book by Yang on Tai Chi Sword and how each sword is different and what you do with the hand not holding the sword can be as important as how you grip the sword in your fighting hand. Yet if you are trained in a police department to shoot one handed with a dominant eye, in WWII they taught you to have the empty hand tighten up and balance out the shooting hand to be more accurate in the OSS. Two cultures, two warrior moments in two different centuries using two weapons not a thing a like, and yet how the warrior internally manages body kinesics is still important. And some times I read a story about what makes shadows in your retina, and just find it kind of fun to read up on it. Reading technical stuff can simply be fun sometimes for its own sake. I have drifted around topics tonight free flowing, but what got me started on thinking about stories, authors, and works, can be a game in itself and I like gaming. In the story by the way of 11, a narrator has a patron that takes in 10 pheasants who are given at random the pleasures of luxury for the palace, they have no special merit, and when their time is over they can never come back, and you never find out how it changed them for the better or worse, since the story is really about the narrator having to shut the door in the next one in the line, the 11th, who varies, is sometimes not any worse than the ten in front or better, but who has to watch the door close in front of them. The story can be thought of as the effect of this decision on the narrator who eventually asks his master to let him have a different job. You never really know the master, you don't know what he gave the job to the narrator, or what the ten coming in for a brief time is really about, but the look in the 11th's eyes is what haunts the narrator. The story has merits, but when you also think about the author loving Stalin and what we know about Stalin now, it impacts me like Starlight snaking her head to the donkey. I struggle to understand how one can be in the other. In fact I wonder is the author in his mind, the master, the narrator, or could he think of himself as the 11th. In trench warfare you at random sometimes dodged the shell, and ate breakfast with a comrade killed by supper and had to wonder about why one dies and one lives. I wonder if that had an impact, or was the author blind to Stalin's purges, or petty enough to want to write a puff piece to a potential patron, or was he oblivious. I will never know, but thinking about books while mowing, can lead you to strange thoughts as lightening clouds gather at the horizon. What Causes “Eye Floaters”

Memorial Day Quotes, Famous Memorial Day Quotes, Memorial Day Quotations, Sayings Decoration Day
I spent yesterday touring Hopkins County cemetery sites to show respect like my family has done for years to all the loved ones in memory and all of the relatives who served our country so well. I sent this link in an email because its important we not forget. I always visit the grave sites of my family, my friends, and coworkers because they mean something to me still. It is a time of remembering Mom putting flowers on her mother's monument, and our family repeating it yesterday. Of trips where Uncle Buford would tell me stories about the folks he knew under various monuments, or my scraping grass clippings hiding a veteran's brass foot marker date away so it could be in the sun again. So many did so much and we can do so little now for them, but I try to keep them warm in memory still. Memorial Day Quotes, Famous Memorial Day Quotes, Memorial Day Quotations, Sayings Decoration Day

Tailored Defense Incorporated - Welcome to Tailored Defense Incorporated
I found in an era where citizens have to be proactive, knowledge can help prevent damage, and good folks can be safer thinking out a plan before a robbery or assault on your home or person that going to professionals of this quality really helps. I am a great believer in Crime-stopper programs, church efforts to change people for the better, and networking to learn from the best. Its a comfort locally to have access to folks that can help you think through any weakness in your planning and upgrade and keep skill levels high. Finding out the staff are people friendly folks, it really helps learn to be proactively safer for your loved ones. Having been robbed in broad daylight where a rock was pitched through a deadbolt locked door and they walked in the hole in the glass, I have learned to use layers. I have a neighbor watch, locked gates at the driveway, intricate monitored burglar alarms, and folks that will come to help me. I was someone without any item that would have made me a special target. But having someone go through your sock drawers and throwing things around while carrying my Axe inside my house in their hands from multiple rooms was not a comforting thought. Having professionals and specialists to draw upon their knowledge is a real comfort. Since this is Memorial Day weekend and my mother's anniversary where she was thrown into Coiltown Lake on her wedding night, its a special weekend. This would be a good weekend to see a veteran and tell them how much you appreciate them or buy a soldier or National Guard fellow a cup of coffee. I had an uncle in Patton's army that helped liberate a concentration camp, an uncle that was in Germany in the military police, and an uncle who fought in Guam and the Philippines and I can't buy them a cup of coffee now that they are gone. We are about to leave to put red, white, and blue flower arrangements on their graves and I wish I could. I also worked with some quality folks that were in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam and in their memory, its a good time to hug a veteran. Battle of Sacramento, KY
We went today to see the end of the week where the white canvas tents covered the fields and ladies in hoop skirts dodged around horses on a scorching hot day. We found Will Frost with his partner left for Nortonville with little on him and his saddle broken. We ended up watering his horses, getting his gear hauled for him to the Springer Road lean to he was staying at with the horses, and tomorrow he will head out to Reno's Tack store to get his saddle fixed. We gave him our supper and water and I brought him back to Diana holding the horses and gave him $60.00 to ensure he was safe and he had earned some helping put down tents and help folks pack for leaving. I did get to visit with my EMA friends from McLean County who were helping out along with the fire department. I ended up falling on straw near a hidden tree root trying to help Diana get the horses off the picket line and ended up busting my right hip on someone else's straw trying to help someone. I am black and blue and off to a hot shower. No good deed goes unpunished. Hopefully he will be safe as he next heads to Evansville on his way to an Indiana battle reenactment somewhere in two weeks. Hopefully my tithe went to a good cause. Battle of Sacramento, KY

What makes people happy? – Religion - CNN.com Blogs
Concepts involved in what does it take to make a person happy. With Jeffery Paul Prow waiting on a kidney for Riley Hospital in Indianapolis to help him heal which may include needing a pancreas while on an insulin pump in his young age, having good health is important. I am lucky to take horse riding dressage lessons on a grandson of Secretariat from a family that will be leaving all their material possessions behind and moving to Italy to be missionary workers for two years with their child. It takes a strong person to give up all their comforts and only live to give to others. Trinity Stables in Robards has always been a good influence in the area and helped many horse people, so one thing you might say is folks that put others before themselves tend to be happy people while in the battle to make things better. A good missionary is never a wimp. A good person tends to be a sheepdog. I read a quote recently that some folks are sheep and never expect a crime to impact them, some folks are wolves and take from weaker and enjoy the power or may lack empathy and swat a person like a fly, and some folks tend to be sheepdogs and get in the game to make things better while being situationally aware of their surroundings and reading body language of folks around them like reading a horses body language. Today my lesson was on keeping your hands still, and legs still, and turning with core muscles to weave Sparky in and out of barriers. Mowing with a 360 Troy mower from Stanley and Sons in Nebo today I thought while I was mowing that I lean into the tree trunk on a hill the same way to balance the mower. I know several folks in nursing homes that cry in the night and want to leave this planet and escape living in a 6 by 8 nursing home bed they will die in and some are still happy when they see their kids, get ice cream, or can interact with a nurse and smile. You can be happy in a cave or a place, be miserable with things, or unhappy with stuff, or be filled with joy smelling the honeysuckle on my fence or watching the rabbit run by the cat in the back yard hiding out as I went by him. He is a calico orange and white that I have caught on a the wildlife camera before. We are in his range. There were indigo buntings on my bird feeder, I was able to help some folks I really like recently, and of all things bringing peanut butter cookies to a teacher in her 90's meant a lot to me seeing her smile. Sometimes doing tai chi in a pasture while the goat watches as I warm up for horse lessons or doing Repulse Monkey form while the donkey Leroy watches with ears out like a plane as he munches hay and thinks about it can make you happy. Sometimes what helps me the most is learning new things. I am getting involved with the local www.hopkinscountytcrimestoppers.com group and the Hopkins County Historical Society. It is always neat to deal with folks that loves books and the value of things that made us what we are. I will be heading toward Fort Campbell soon for some training and many are about to be dispatched overseas to try and protect folks like me. If you can buy lunch for a soldier or a policeman, it might be a good thing to do as Memorial Day approaches. It might even make you happy. What makes people happy? – Religion - CNN.com Blogs

SPACE.com -- Lost Soviet Reflecting Device Rediscovered on the Moon
This is a very interesting article since it reflects the obvious proof with the other laser reflectors that NASA did land on the moon several times since you can photograph from the earth, bounce off a man made object, and see shadows off photos of the landers. Mythbusters, one of my favorite programs on Discovery, covered this in detail and this is just one more neat thing to tie it up. I always had a soft spot for Buzz Aldrin and when a fellow pushed him at his age in his face to swear on a Bible had he really done his life's work, the fighter pilot part came to the surface and he decked the fellow. I can understand his frustration since I do not think once a world view is locked in in some minds, there is any way to budge it once the mind invests itself in the myth. Sunlight Qigong done by Master Nianzuli in a very relaxing, spring sunshine routine to promote health and well being. It is of interest that all great chi kung (alternate spelling) artists and masters seem to incorporate breathing into the movement and time the movement by the breathing. It does not help to force the move since you would not be as relaxed as possible. Tai Chi is full of movements that are spirals and circles and rounded joints without harsh turn with the goal that the real winner is the one most relaxed and smooth. Note how relaxed and how even the hands are not tense in all movements he makes. My teacher at Madisonville Community College teaches you to have better range of motion and better relaxation. Nature fakers controversy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I always enjoy Teddy Roosevelt stories and in fact have read a book where Sherlock Holmes and Teddy as New York Police Commissioner investigate a mystery together. I always think of him as the kind of fellow who filled a room with personality whether a camp tent or Madison Square Garden. I think this is interesting since enjoyment of the art of nature and the scientific detachment point of view are still important. I think one of early influences in biology was Konrad Lorenz's book the Nature of Bees and King Solomon's Ring discussing animal behavior. I do think watching raccoons on my front porch there are genetic influences, instinct influences, and individuals still show behaviors that are specific to that individual where for example one likes to stand on its hind legs and look at traffic on the road go by and does it night after night while the others let him be the scout and guard and don't care to bother to look. It is similar in horse herds where one mare watches and the young horses lie down to sleep only if feeling safe and the head mare is watching out for them. It is not easy to be the head mare in a horse herd. Now we know decades later a lot more about animal behavior and how complex it can be the more intelligent the animal. I think the greatest modern animal experts were folks that studied the primates sometimes at great personal cost. Nature fakers controversy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I also had the fun of doing Ward Off and sparrow and had my left hand go low and touch Moses the Great Dane's cold nose which was kind of fun. We did it at MCC near the Glema Mahr site by one of my favorite statues of a little boy Indian with bow behind him looking down sheepishly and a big ole bear looking him in the face entitled Repentence. I was near Magnolia blossuming trees with the wind up from the storms and was kind of neat. At 10 am we did 4 rounds to each compass direction and managed to get home before the storms hit. It was very good for me and to honor my classmates who have been blessed with a good teacher and a good art to learn for stress relief and for health. AccuWeather.com - Weather News | Life-Threatening Thunderstorms Friday Evening
There are many ways to prepare for a storm event. One is to follow the recommendations on www.ready.gov, or www.fema.gov, or simply keep up with your medicines, papers, emergency pack, emergency phone numbers, know your escape routes in case of flooding etc. More people get hurt in flooding in Kentucky during a storm event than lightening or actual tornadoes. A tornado can destroy one end of a town and have the other end appear normal. It can take one house and leave intact the one across the street. Your best purchase is to have a good working fresh battery weather radio and use it on a weekend like we are about to get in Western Kentucky. Be safe. Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening - Poets.org - Poetry, Poems, Bios & More
As an old ERT man, I always thought this was my second favorite poem of Robert Frost since I have always like the last stanza walking a creek from an investigation by flashlight and star trying to get back to the state car to start driving home after a long day. One night looking for an oil spill, I remember using the squelch of my walkie talkie to keep the pacing animal just out of sight following me along the pathway always parallel, always out of sight, to stop following me. I think it was a coyote, but I will never know for sure.It was just another night's adventure and a long drive home afterwards, yet I can remember how the night smelled under the stars. This is my favorite Robert Frost poem. This link includes a audio version you can listen to as you read. I always like best the last stanza. Yet I would add, it is important to at least take a road than stand still only. The Road Not Taken - Poets.org - Poetry, Poems, Bios & More
A Robert Frost Exhibit
Since I am reviewing Mending Wall, it was kind of important to know what kind of wall Frost had on his own farm that created the poem. Note it is a natural stone wall like the Shakertown farmers used to open up pasture and row crop land. It moved hard things out of the way to safe edges to allow the open area to open up in effect. I am studying two works one by Toni Morrison called Recitatif and one by Robert Frost about walls. Of the two I had more experience with Frost whose the Road less taken poem meant more to me than Mending Wall. Still I do think for an iambic pentameter verse it has many interesting sides. I like the first line the best. I am a person who after being robbed actually ended up being the one behind bars since I have lockable cattle gates at the end of the driveway and burglary alarms with monitoring set for the house. Yet one thing is still certain, we need to be open as people, and cautious with wisdom knowing we all also need our space. Walls of stone also have another meaning to me. Many were made by picking up loose stones blocking pathways and horse routes or plowing zones and putting the stones from the land on edges out of the way. This is common in Shakertown where Irish stone masons made fences and boundary marks without mortar. A wall can have many meanings to keep out, to keep in, to mark territory, or preserve space, or to open up the middle ground. I am doing a book review Thursday night with friends and as a lover of books, it gives me something to look forward to on a Thursday night. Mending Wall - Poets.org - Poetry, Poems, Bios & More

NASA - Image Gallery
On certain nights following the link on the NASA page you can watch the shuttle go overhead in Kentucky with it very bright when together and really neat when they are flying apart but in tandem. You can still see them with the naked eye on a clear night and it always gives me a kind of Star Trek moment in my driveway looking up and dreaming. No matter our problems on earth, I like to think we should dream looking up. NASA -

Computer security is a fast growing topic. This article does a cost benefit analysis to password use and changing passwords. After being robbed, I spent hours updating passwords down to the modem. In effect I made a stolen laptop a brick the best I could and monitored all accounts to make sure there was nothing new. Even so just like a house, you can have burglar alarms, dogs, gates, extra locks, but if a deaf burglar wants in they can get in even if its loud and annoying. The key is for them to make a cost benefit analysis that you are too much trouble for too little potential award. I am not a big enough target to make it worthwhile. In the meantime, you do hte obvious things you can do. As an example, I do not play with chain letters which may have in an email a key logger, I do not open attachments from strangers. I do a full virus scan monthly when I defrag. I do quick scans weekly and check desk quarterly. I have all windows updates on automatic and do virus DAT file updates prior to connecting to the Internet on even the most harmless famous webpage in case of a passive lurking hazard there. In a world that says you will be attacked with a connection to the Internet within 20 minutes you simply have to use a firewall and virus program just like I lock doors and activate the alarms. You can do everything right as a user and still get bit simply because the bag guys are always out there thinking of a way to not do work honestly. The key is it seems lately that the most helpless, good folks, who are elderly or geek innocent are the ones being harmed and that always upsets me when the victims are like shooting a mockingbird as the novel said. Ideally, by using up to date software by the experts, and trying to do the right things, I can escape an attack, but the best way I am protected is I am too small to be worth the effort. I am not that attractive a target. I do like the addition of biometrics to a laptop and I added use of a cable lock to the laptop to make it even harder to be so handy to pick up. My dead bolt locks in broad daylight were defeated by a large rock through the glass den door. Low tech is still one of the most common ways to get to you. In a PC world where someone just wants to see photos of the grand children and look up the cost of a tractor on line, defenses should be effective and practical to enjoy the experience without having misery to worry every minute. On the other hand, if the thieves get caught in our justice system, I will be one supporting law enforcement and asking they not get out easily which means I will get to pay for feeding them and their medical care. Prevention of a theft is still cheaper. Luckily in Hopkins County we have a very good Sheriff's department and Computer Knights on South Main gives me very good IT support. I think NASA has some of the best science sites on the web and this photo of the day illustrates one of the things that makes science such a cool thing to do. DRocketGard_craigcrawford.jpg (1350900)

NASA - NASA's Unpiloted Global Hawk Completes First Science Flight
I have always been a fan of NASA and once took Mom to every NASA facility you can tour in the Southeast over a period of years. Mom was always most surprised that freeze dried astronaut ice cream was not cold. I was most impressed how fragile the Mercury capsule looked like and that is one reason folks like Buzz Aldrin and John Glenn remain heroes I am proud to have as Americans. I managed to work an hour at the Fitness Formula with our class and I can tell it in my arms. It is odd that working with four pound weights for 30 rep's, can get your arms and shoulders so sore. Oddly enough the one that is hardest for my arms is where you take the weights in front of you and then kind of pour out of a bucket movement. My arms burn like a big dog on that one. The second hardest is to lie back on your chair and bring your weights up and then together using chest muscles. Tai Chi work has helped me get more leg strength and more flexibility thankfully. I sometimes try to get in two Tai Chi rounds after class since it helps me get less sore afterwards. I was able to get to Belle our horse and my daughter in effect and groom a muddy side she laid in after the storm and she tried to groom my back while I brushed her. Horses are amazing creatures and I am still learning about them. What I don't know is much larger than what I think I know. At least I can fill water buckets, groom, check hooves, and know my horse loves her FOODS. Now work may be a four letter word, but at least she is happy. Sonny Hovious found she likes to eat Starlight peppermints. Live long and prosper. NASA -
